Tech Talk: R-410a Retrofits into R-22 Systems

We wanted to spend a few moments this week talking about an increasingly common service for our commercial clients: R-410 A Retrofits Into R-22 Systems. This week we’ll cover why you should retrofit from R-22 to R-410A as well as when and how to convert your equipment from R-22 to R-410A Refrigerants. If you have additional questions or would like to talk more, please do not hesitate to contact us via our website contact tool, email us or just give us a call!

Why: If you rely on a heating or cooling system that uses R22 refrigerant, an ozone depleting substance (ODS), you may be in for a surprise during your next service visit. As of January 1, 2020, production and import of R22 refrigerant will be illegal in the United States. With the elimination of R-22, there are millions of A/C systems across the US that will need to be converted to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant in the coming years

When: We are over three years past the last production/import date of R22 refrigerant so the time to decide is now! Here are a few considerations:

-Parts are no longer available

o Due to EPA and DOE regulation changes – R-22 replacement equipment sales in the southwestern and southeastern US are already banned

-Major repair for old units

o The standard lifespan of residential condensers are 15 years for a heat pump and 20 years for an straight A/C unit. However; this cannot be the defining factor on all units and we must preserve them for as long as possible. Several of the properties we have managed have had equipment over 35 years old!

-High costs for repair

o Depending on the market you are in, some repairs can cost as much as a retrofit

Conclusion:

A proper retrofit requires extensive experience and expertise. We here at BCS Service Pros are just that – pros and we’d love to talk more about this solution with you. Feel free to email us, contact us through the website or give us a phone call – looking forward to hearing from you!
